Hi, I’m Em, I am a queer, white, non-binary voice teacher and vocalist living on the unceded traditional territories of the T’Sou-ke Nation. I graduated from Capilano University with a degree in Jazz Voice Performance in 2014 and have a decade worth of diverse teaching experience. Committed to ongoing learning and un-learning, I’ve studied voice methodologies such as Estill and Fitzmaurice, and have a keen interest in body-based and non-linear pedagogy.
In 2023 my own gender experience intertwined with my voice teaching when I learned that gender-affirming voice work existed (thank you Instagram!). This led me to take Renee Yoxon’s Trans Voice Teacher Training, and I began teaching gender-affirming voice lessons soon after. Since then, I’ve continued my education through self-study, and recently completed Gender Affirming Voice And Speech and Singing: Training for Teachers And SLPs with Liz Jackson Hearns. As a non-binary person, I have lived experience of my body and voice not feeling like quite the right fit, and I’m passionate about sharing tools and knowledge with other queer and trans folks wanting to expand their own gender experience through their voices. My work is guided by my anti-oppressive values, activism, and commitment to continuous unpacking of my own privilege as a white settler on stolen land.
I also perform and sing with a handful of bands and projects including Only a Visitor, Moondle, and Streams Poetry Project. When I’m not doing musical things, you will find me in the garden, studying and making herbal medicine (Moonseed Herbals), and walking in the woods.
