Finding Your Voice: Gender Affirming Vocal Coaching with Em
For many trans and non binary people, voice is not just sound. It is identity, safety, self expression, and the feeling of being understood in the world. At Allies Integrated Health, we believe in care that supports the whole person, and that includes the voice you move through the world with.
This is where Em Postl shines. Em is a queer, non binary voice teacher and vocalist with more than a decade of experience. Their approach to gender affirming vocal coaching is grounded in curiosity, body awareness, and the belief that your voice is not something to force into place. It is something to meet, listen to, and grow with.
Em teaches from a place of anti-oppressive practice, nervous system awareness, and deep respect for each person’s lived experience. Their goal is not to teach you how to sound like someone else. Their goal is to help you find the voice that feels most like you.
What gender affirming vocal coaching looks like with Em
Gender affirming vocal coaching is not simply pitch modification or practicing a certain resonance. For Em, it is a relationship with the body. Sessions invite people to slow down, get curious, and follow sensation. This can include:
- Understanding how the voice moves through the body
- Breath, grounding, and nervous system awareness
- Playful exploration instead of strict vocal drills
- Building new patterns gradually and sustainably
- Letting voice shifts emerge from comfort, not tension
Em’s educational background includes trans voice teacher training with Renee Yoxon and Liz Jackson Hearns, body based voice pedagogy work with Jeremy Mossman, and foundational training in Estill and Fitzmaurice vocal methods. They bring a gentle, experiential approach that lets people try things without pressure
Sessions are collaborative. You decide the pace. You decide the goals. Em guides, supports, and helps you discover what feels like home.
Who gender affirming vocal coaching is for
Em works with anyone who wants a voice that feels aligned with their identity. This includes:
- Trans women
- Trans men
- Non binary people
- Gender expansive folks
- People on HRT and people not on HRT
- Anyone who wants a voice that feels more comfortable in their daily life
Some people come wanting a softer voice. Some want a voice that feels stronger or more grounded. Some want a voice that feels playful. Some want to explore without knowing exactly where it will lead. All of it is welcome.
Upcoming workshop: Voice Crack : an intro to gender-affirming voice work.
Em has a new workshop coming up called Voice Crack. This workshop is for anyone wanting to shift their voice to match their gender identity, or for anyone at all voice-curious! It will cover the basic elements involved in trans voice work, general vocal health practices, and ways to start building your own gender-affirming voice practice.
Participants will learn a handful of techniques and exercises they can do at home, get a chance to connect with queer & trans community, and will leave the workshop with handouts and practice tips!
And if you want a voice community that is warm, queer, and supportive, this class is for you.
Why voice work matters
For many people, gender affirming voice work can create profound changes. Not just in how others hear them, but in how they feel in themselves. Voice can bring connection, safety, and a sense of coherence. It can also help reduce dysphoria, support self expression, and build confidence in social and intimate spaces.
Em’s work sits at the intersection of embodiment, identity, and sound. Their sessions and classes offer a place to explore voice without fear, pressure, or perfectionism. Voice becomes something you build a relationship with rather than something you struggle against.
